Golf in Thailand
Welcome to golf in Thailand and be assured that you are not the first one. The world's most famous designers have put their signatures throughout the Kingdom, including Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Trent-Jones Jr, Dye, Norman, Curley Schmidt and Peter Thompson to name a few. What may be even more impressive is the remarkably unique designs that have resulted from the many Thai and other Asian designers. This is a big reason why many world class events are held here from The Johnny Walker Classic to regular European and Asian Tour events and now the LPGA has followed suit.
The diversity of golf courses rivals the Kingdom itself. Hua Hin's Royal Hua Hin Golf Club was Thailand's first course and many of its fairways are lined with huge trees and topiary shrubbery in shapes of animals and Thai mythological creatures. A twenty minute drive west to the base of the mountains brings you to Springfield Royal Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus signature course of 27 holes that has hosted many pro tour events. A few minutes south is Imperial Lake View with 36 holes and the site of the Asian Tour's 2007 Thailand Open. Imagine playing a morning round at Royal Hua Hin then spending a few hours on the beach, followed by an hour and a half rejuvenating spa treatment and you feel so good you want to play another round. It's 2:30, no problem, as Palm Hills is less than 10 minutes from town and you can easily get in a round and watch the sun set into the Gulf of Siam as you finish the back nine. There is still Majestic Creek and Milford Golf Club to enjoy and the drive to these courses take you through the fertile farmlands of pineapples, mango, sugar cane and aloe vera. The Black Mountain, Banyan and Queen's Valley (aspiring to host a European PGA Tour event) golf courses are all under construction and moving towards completion and there are other courses in the planning stages. This once small fishing town has trulytransformed itself into the premier golf destination in Thailand.
The island of Phuket has what is considered possibly the finest course in all of Asia, Blue Canyon. Many courses in the area offer dramatic views of the idyllic Andaman Sea. A month would not be enough time to even start to play all the courses in Bangkok. An hour drive from there brings you to the huge resort of Pattaya on the northern gulf coast and a month would probably allow you time "to play them all" including the St. Andrews 2000 which measures 7777 (lucky) yards from the tips.
As you travel north into the interior and leave the ocean behind you enter a world of parkland golf courses built along rivers, lakes, densely forested jungles, hills and mountains. The River Kwai/Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi areas in the western central region is home to some very pristine and highly praised courses that are seldom crowded with many golfers.
The exotic and ancient "Golden Triangle" of Chang Rai is the northern border of Thailand. The magnificent mountains, filled with the indigenous and extremely colorful hilltribe villages, that border Myanmar and Laos are the backdrop to courses of this area. World class Santiburi Golf Course is just a 20 minute drive from Chang Rai and equally impressive Waterford is about twice that distance. Your drives on the courses and "to" the courses are spectacular.
Chiang Mai, one hundred and fifty kilometres south of Chiang Rai, offers magnificient Golf Courses including Chiang Mai Highlands, Royal Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Lamphun and the newly built Gassan Khuntan Golf and Resort Courses.
Golf in Thailand is a unique experience for "first timers". Caddies are required on all courses for a nominal fee (about 5 Euros). The moment you arrive at a course they become your personal partner. Your clubs are counted, cleaned and registered with the caddy-master while you go to the clubhouse to prepare for your round. They will assist you with yardages, fix your divots, rake the bunkers, mark your ball on the greens and even remove the ball from the hole after you sink your putts. The freedom of walking a golf course without the cumbersome task of carrying or pulling your clubs is an experience unsurpassed in the game. If you choose to use a motorized cart they will also be right there to assist you with their ubiquitous Thai smiles.
Volumes have been written about the unique diversity of golf in the Kingdom, where some courses contain nearly 3000 different types of trees, shrubs and flowers and others contain more different kinds of wild, exotic and beautiful wildfowl than many zoos. Yes it's exotic, and yes, there are dragons here, even in Hua Hin, as 8 foot Komodos have been seen lumbering, across some fairways.
Golf is sometimes more than just getting the ball in the hole, sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses. The great thing here is many times you don't even have to stop as you are immersed in the sensual smell of hundreds and sometimes thousands of trees and flowers in full bloom and fragrance.
Remember this is not a dream or a movie it's the everyday experience of Golf in the Kingdom of Thailand.
